The Wrap Up - Linocut Without a Press

Can you believe it's been a month since our classes started?

“The only art I’ll ever study is stuff I can steal from.”

Welcome back, printmaking nerds. Thank you so much to everyone who made it to every single one of the Speedball Instagram live classes! I hope they were informative, funny and inspired you to get printing! An inky welcome to the 22 new folks who joined our Inkplate community this week.

In today’s issue:

Let’s dive in!

Recap of Class 4 - Signing & Mixed Media

In case you missed the fourth and final Instagram live class for “Linocut Without a Press” this past Saturday, you can watch it here, and also on the @Speedball_art profile.

Got to start each session with some cafecito!

Week four featured a few topics. If you have not taken the survey, but would like to fill it out, you can do so here.

  • The class began with sharing some of the survey responses. I answered a few questions brought up during the feedback. I love all of the constructive thoughts and tips.

  • We then used some watercolors to add a touch of color to some prints. One thing to keep in mind when using watercolors is to not get the ink too wet or this will activate it and muddy the colors.

  • I then moved on to use calligraphy ink and nib to hand write a quote on the print. We made a unique hand modification to the print.

  • I also demonstrated how to use India ink to correct small “mistakes” on a print. One of the viewers mentioned that over time the India ink would fade differently than the relief ink. This was a very valid point made as certain inks will have different qualities that may not be archival.

  • Once the prints had been modified, we went over the different ways prints can be signed.

  • Printing acronyms were discussed such as AP which stands for Artist Proof and HMD standing for Hand Modified Print. We also went over how a series of hand modified prints could be counted as a limited-edition print.

  • Next, we examined our AP’s and took note of areas that needed correction such as the ear around Frida Kahlo’s lips and eyes, which were too dark and needed some corrections. At this point, using the AP as a guide, we carved a few areas to keep adjusting the print.

  • Finally, with the use of pencil and a sheet of paper, we made a rubbing of the block to get an idea of how the small corrections in the print had changed the design. The pencil rubbing proof method is an easy way to not bring out ink to pull a proof.

This series of classes were originally an idea I had for a few Youtube videos. One of the feedback comments was if these videos could be uploaded to YouTube. Unfortunately, Instagram live videos were not saved to a device and immediately uploaded after the class. Thus, the only place the live sessions are currently existing is on Instagram.

However, I am planning on producing videos for YouTube where there will be subtitles, links, and you will be able to speed up the play time and watch in HD. A truly immersive experience!

In all honesty, I may not get to recording and editing these videos until probably May, but know that I will be uploading more free courses to my YouTube channel in the future.

New Course - Introduction to Reduction Linocut

You really made Brandon and myself blush with your amazing feedback. We both want to thank the viewers wholeheartedly for tuning in each Saturday! We will be, however, taking a short break. There will be no live class on Saturday, 03/11/2023 and 03/18/2023.

Some of the responses to the survey.

The number one topic requested for a future class was multicolor prints, followed by reduction linocut, working with a woodzilla press was third, and in fourth place were jigsaw prints & printing on fabric. Having said that….

On Saturday March 25, 2023, we will start the Introduction to Reduction Linocut series! This class will also take place on @Speedball_Art Instagram profile. All live classes will start promptly at 9:00 AM PST / 12 PM EST. Many thanks and appreciation to their support and collaboration.

Just like in the previous course, each live class will cover a different aspect of printmaking as well as a presentation on how to work with a multicolor print from beginning to end. If you would like to start shopping for materials to follow along, you can view this list of materials I created.

This new list included a few more details such as class times, information about pricing, how to budget as a printmaker and insight into how to access previous recordings.

Stockton Art League Exhibit

I was invited to exhibit some of my prints by the Stockton Art League this March at the Elise May Goodwin Gallery. I will be featured as their “Artist of the Month.”

The gallery will be hosting a reception on Saturday, March 11th, 2023, from 4:00 - 6:00 pm PST. If you are a local and are able to come, please come by! This would be a good time to get to see a chunk of my work in one place at the same time! Refreshments will be available.

Gallery Address: 1902 Pacific Avenue, Stockton, CA 95204

Spring Break

Mr. Brandon took some headshots of me this weekend and this one is one of my favorites!

Brandon and I will be taking some time off from work for Spring Break! There will be no new issue of The Inkplate next Monday, March 13, 2023. You can expect a new issue on Monday March 20th, which will include an Artist Highlight for March! You are going to love her work!

See you in a few days!
